"Play is the serious business of early childhood." We would all agree with Jerome Bruners famous statement. Yet, in our digital age, often the right types of play at the right time arent taking place. To help parents and educators, Gloria DeGaetano presents a way to make sure necessary play experiences dont get short-changed in our digital age.

She presents three types of play: 1.) physical play involving movement and sensory experiences; 2.) imaginative play involving generative creativity, visioning, and self-understanding; and 3.) screen playthe play youngsters do on i-pads, hand-held devices, and computers.

Practical suggestions for toddlers through age two; ages three-five, and ages six through eight are given in terms of how much of each type of play is beneficial at each particular age/stage for childrens optimal brain development.

Gloria DeGaetano is an acclaimed educator and speaker who developed the Parent Coach Certification Training Program in 2000 with the establishment of the Parent Coaching Institute. Through Parent Coach International, Glorias programs for supporting families are available worldwide. With over 25 years of experience helping professionals and parents with screen technology issues, Gloria is the author of Parenting Well in a Media Age and the co-author of Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill: A Call for Action Against TV, Movie, and Video Game Violence.
